What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye disease is a common condition that affects the eye’s ability to keep itself lubricated. The problem occurs within the eye’s tear film. If a patient’s tear film isn’t able to produce and maintain high-quality tears, it’s possible the patient will begin to experience the irritation and symptoms of dry eye.

Dry eye can be caused by a variety of factors. Some limit the eye from producing tears, while others increase the evaporation speed of the tears. Factors such as diet, dry air, allergies, or old age can all contribute to a patient’s risk of dry eye.

What is OptiLight by Lumenis?

OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, non-invasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

How Does It Work?

OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.

This application can significantly relieve dry eye indicators and has a multi-factorial effect, including:

  • Increasing tear break-up time
  • Reducing the amount of demodex mites and bacteria living around your eyes
  • Eliminating blood vessels that contribute to inflammation
  • Improving meibomian gland functionality

What to Expect

Before Your Treatment

To begin, you will need a dry eye consultation. At that time, Dr. Jill will perform a complete evaluation of your tear and meibomian gland function. She will review and discuss any contraindications to ensure that you are a good candidate for the procedure.

It’s important to discuss all of your health issues, current medical treatments, and medications before receiving an OptiLight treatment. A full list of contraindications is available from our team.

If you are a candidate, we will book an appointment. You will be given two forms – an informed consent and a skin typing questionnaire. Please bring those forms to your treatment. To prepare for your treatment, please arrive at the office with a clean face- no makeup or skin creams. Gentlemen, please shave closely before your appointment. Comfortable clothing is advised.

We will prepare you for the treatment by thoroughly explaining the process to you. We’ll answer any questions that you may have before we begin.
Your hair will be secured out of the way with a headband and your face will be cleaned in preparation for your OptiLight procedure.

The treatment is relatively quick and convenient.  It can be completed during your lunch break.

During the treatment, coupling gel will be applied to the treatment area and your eyes will be covered with protective shields and goggles.

As light is applied to the skin, you will experience an instant of bright light coupled with a warm sensation. There is a brief moment of reaction- commonly described as being snapped with a rubber band.  The treatment is typically well tolerated. The level of intensity can be customized as needed for patient comfort. The treatment itself will take approximately 15 minutes. Please allow 45 minutes of time for preparation, treatment, and post treatment instruction.

After treatment, the gel is removed, and your face will be cleaned. Sun protection of UV 50+ will be provided for immediate application. You are allowed to apply makeup as desired and resume normal daily activities. The only restriction is to avoid UV exposure- to include outdoor sun exposure, sun tanning booths, and sun tanning products for the following 2 weeks. Sun protection is always important, but the two weeks following an IPL treatment is crucial.
The recommended initial treatment plan is to perform IPL treatments every 3-4 weeks for 4 months. Four treatments are expected to achieve the desired result. Maintenance sessions are expected – with most patients having a maintenance session every 6 months. Individual results differ and will be adjusted accordingly.

Will the OptiLight Work for Me?

While OptiLight by Lumenis is an effective dry eye management solution, we want to make sure it’s right for you. We do not recommend this treatment if you:

  • Suffer from aqueous deficiency dry eye (rather than evaporative dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction)
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have severe scarring around your eyes

Ultimately, your doctor is the only person who can determine whether this option is right for you. During your next appointment, ask us if you are a good candidate for OptiLight by Lumenis.
