When to Have an Eye Exam

Well, we would love to see you every week for your routine eye exam! But that’s not the case for eye exams. If you think it’s hard to fit another appointment into your schedule, you’ll be happy to know that for most patients, an eye exam every year or two will suffice. Our pals at the American Optometric Association recommend the following schedule for eye exams:

  • Adults ages 18 to 64 should have an eye exam every 2 years.
  • Adults 65 and older should have an eye exam every year.

However, if you’re an at-risk patient, we may recommend more frequent eye exams to monitor your ocular health, manage your eye conditions, and treat sudden vision changes accordingly. So if you have a family history of eye disease, wear contact lenses, or fit under other factors that put your eye health at risk, please get in touch with us for a personalized appointment.

What Happens During Your Eye Exam?

As soon as you step into our office, you’ll sense a vibe that you wouldn’t expect from an eye care practice. Inside our historic building, the stunning exposed brick enhances the timelessness of the space, giving it an apothecary feel. Our optical gallery features few large windows that look over to Opera House Square.

Meet & Greet

Once you walk through the doors, you’ll be greeted immediately by our front desk team. Enjoy the views overlooking the park while you fill out any necessary paperwork. We’ll then escort you to our pre-testing room.

In the pre-testing area, Dr. Jill or a technician will perform some preliminary evaluations, which may include:

  • Visual acuity tests with a Snellen chart
  • Depth perception evaluations
  • Color vision assessments
  • Peripheral vision tests
  • How your pupils respond to light

After the preliminary tests, you’ll move into the eye exam room with lots of fancy machines used to assess your eye health.

If Dr. Jill hasn’t already done so in the pre-testing room, she’ll now take a detailed account of your overall health. This includes your personal and family medical history, digital device habits, lifestyle, and any health concerns you have, eye-related or otherwise. This way, she gets a holistic view of your health and can treat your vision according to your needs. Building relationships with our patients takes precedence—so don’t be surprised if you hit it off with Dr. Jill like you’re talking to a big sister.

During the eye exam, Dr. Jill regularly checks for eye diseases and conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). She’ll also assess your eyes’ refraction to determine whether you need glasses or an updated prescription—or if you’re a lucky patient with 20/20 vision. And, your exam includes a test of how well your eyes work together.

To conclude the eye exam, Dr. Jill will review her findings and loop you in on the status of your eye health. If you have any lingering questions, please ask! We want you to feel confident in your vision when you walk out the door.

The next step in the process takes you back to the optical emporium. Here, you can browse our exquisite selection of eyeglass frames and sunglasses, including frames from Tiffany—which is exclusive to Dr. Jill’s when shopping in Oshkosh. Our styles range from funky-fresh to ever-elegant, and our optical staff will be glad to help you find your perfect fit.

Children Need Eye Exams, Too!

Childhood is the best time to start having regular eye exams! Because your child’s eyes are continuously growing, eye exams can help us detect potential issues before they affect your child’s quality of life.

We begin seeing our littlest patients just as they turn 6 years old. When you and your child come for the exam, please feel free to ask questions or stress any concerns either of you have—we use this information to orientate the exam to address your child’s unique needs and lifestyle.

Our goal is to bring your child comfortable, clear vision that will serve them for the rest of their life. Let us help your child enjoy their vision, from the first day of school to walking the stage at graduation, and beyond.

Does Your Child Have a Vision Problem?

Being a parent is a wonderful experience, but managing your child’s eye health isn’t exactly child’s play.

Identifying a problem with your child’s eyes can be challenging without the help of an optometrist, and it’s possible your child might be unaware of the vision issues they may have.

There are several signs you can look for that may signal an eye problem. If you notice any of these behaviors, please book your child for an eye exam with us today.

  • Sitting close to screens or presentations
  • Difficulty reading
  • Frequently squinting
  • Frequent headaches
